Heraldo do Monte (born 1 May 1935 in Recife, Pernambuco, Brasil) is a Brazilian guitarist. He has played and recorded with Gilberto Gil and Hermeto Pascoal, among other artists. Heraldo do Monte also plays the cavaquinho and the caipira (country) guitar. Still young, he bought an electric guitar to start playing at nightclubs in the city of Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco. Shortly thereafter, he left for São Paulo where he was employed by TV Tupi accompanying the musicians who performed on the channel. In 1966 he joined Trio Novo [New Trio], which later became Quarteto Novo [New Quartet]. Other brilliant musicians were members of this quartet. Heraldo played guitar; Theo de Barros, bass; Hermeto Pascoal, piano and flute; Airto Moreira, drums and percussion. With jazzy elements in a strongly Brazilian atmosphere (mainly from the Northeast) they introduced innovative elements to instrumental music made at the time.
