Mike Patton’s “Falling To Pieces”: torn between Mr. Bungle and FNM

In an interview, Faith No More’s producer Matt Wallace remarks that “during The Real Thing, Mike Patton was still not 100 percent committed to Faith No More, and this is my own reading, I could be wrong, but I think his way of protecting himself and feeling like he was still part of Bungle was that he took on almost a different persona on The Real Thing, which made it easy to say, ‘Yeah, I’m in this band, but I’m not really in it’. But once Angel Dust came around, Patton was much more involved in the genesis of the songs, he was there during the inception, during the writing, he was there guiding the arrangements, and I think he became much more involved and invested in that record.”

Indecision clouds my vision
No one listens
Because I’m somewhere in between
My love and my agony
You see, I’m somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together

Mike Patton, “Falling to pieces” (The Real Thing)

About Falling to pieces, one of the hit songs on The Real Thing, FNM’s first album with Mike Patton (who’s wearing a Mr. Bungle t-shirt on the “Epic” music video), Wallace says: “I haven’t asked Mike [Patton, vocalist] about this, but I’m pretty sure it’s about the fact that he’s torn between this band Mr. Bungle and this band Faith No More, and this whole ‘indecision’ [in the lyric] is the fact that he’s stuck between two places.”

Back and forth, I sway with the wind
Resolution slips away again
Right through my fingers, back into my heart
Where it’s out of reach and it’s in the dark
Sometimes I think I’m blind
Or I may be just paralyzed
Because the plot thickens every day
And the pieces of my puzzle keep crumblin’ away
But I know
There’s a picture beneath
Indecision clouds my vision
No one listens

Because I’m somewhere in between
My love and my agony
You see, I’m somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together

Layin’ face down on the ground
My fingers in my ears to block the sound
My eyes shut tight to avoid the sight
Anticipating the end, losing the will to fight
Droplets of “yes” and “no”
In an ocean of “maybe”
From the bottom, it looks like a steep incline
From the top, another downhill slope of mine
But I know, the equilibrium’s there
Indecision clouds my vision
No one listens

Because I’m somewhere in between
My love and my agony
You see, I’m somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together

Back and forth, I sway with the wind
Resolution slips away again
Right through my fingers, back into my heart
Where it’s out of reach and it’s in the dark
Sometimes I think I’m blind
Or I may be just paralyzed
Because the plot thickens every day
And the pieces of my puzzle keep crumblin’ away
But I know, there’s a picture beneath
Indecision clouds my vision
No one listens

Because I’m somewhere in between
My love and my agony
You see, I’m somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together

In between
My love and my agony
You see, I’m somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together

In between
Somebody put me together

In between
Somebody put me together
